TERRY'S TIDBITS

Before you panic about Flip Saunders and the seven first-round playoff knock outs do your self a favor. Look at the rosters that surrounded Saunders and super star Kevin Garnett. Trust me when I say none will make the basketball Hall of Fame. Heck, most would not even make the Minneapolis Hall of Fame.
So lets give this guy a chance before you panic.

** The good news is the Tigers have hovered around five to six games out of a wild card berth. The bad news is there are enough teams between them and the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins to create a traffic jam on the Lodge freeway. There is no way the Tigers can pass this log jam and get into the post season.
So are they buyers or sellers? I say the Tigers should be buyers for next season. Pitcher A.J. Burnett sure would look good here.

** If you have time check me out tonight at Cheli's Chili in Dearborn. I will be there from 8-10 p.m. for an AM 1270 The Sports Station appearance. You could win a trip to Toronto during our on going rock 'em sock 'em robot boxing tournament. I did a few of those last year and they are a riot. So come on out, hang out and we can chat a bit.

** Lance Armstrong is about to win his seventh straight Tour de' France. A part of me applauds his efforts. And a part of me believes he is a cheater. There is too much smoke surrounding him. I believe in a few years it will come out conclusively that he cheated his way toward the top.

** During the Flip Saunders press conference some of us writers got into a spirited debate about the Detroit Lions. Who has the most pressure on them? Is it Head Coach Steve Mariucci or quarterback Joey Harrington?
I voted for Mooch because Harrington could lose his job and I believe you are going to boo him louder if things don't work out. Yes, many of you were disgruntled with the coach's play calls but Harrington will get the brunt of fan complaints at Ford Field and on talk radio.
Mooch's job is safe too. The Lions are owned by the Ford family which has a history of letting people hang around too long.

** I admit I will be watching Harrington and Mariucci closely. But I also want to see what happens with receiver Charles Rogers. Can he hold up physically? If he does I still say he is the Lions best receiver until further notice.

** Hey did you see the Tigers ghastly 10-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins Thursday? Of course you didn't. It is beyond me how a town this big and with baseball tradition this rich can have 52 games not televised by any one.
I spoke to a source who told me Channel 50, not the Tigers, did not want to broadcast games. It seems as if 50 is trying to save money and didn't even want to spend money on production. The Tigers offered them the package for free and 50 still turned it down.

** Excuse me for a bit. The family and I are going to Cedar Point for a couple days and I just saw how much tickets for a one-day pass are. I am not hunting for discount tickets.
See you at Chelli's tonight.

Clerical issue Fans whenever we get to football. Please don;t try and say well if i was getting paid this much money I would play. NfL team owners are ruthless so I say whenever the players has the leverage use it. Look at my hometown guy Earl Campbell. Now the Titans are like Earl who.

As far as Mooch and JOey. If Joey fails we are sunk once again. I know folks will talk up Jeff SOfty Garcia. Folks he can;t throw downfield and if our recievers are healty you have got to go deep and Joey has that arm to do it. Mooch get some stones and go deep. I truly hate the west coast offense reminds me the pistons under Carlisle brutal. There is no reason provided Joey does well why the lions can;t be lights out on offense which is what the defense really needs. Also becuase of our track this bend but don;t break defense should be attack and attack.

The tigers I think should stand pat and finish the season and try and have a winning season. The wild is too hard too attain but acheiving a winning record is not. Let me say this Trammell is a mediocre manager at best so the tigers might finish one game to have a winning season. Although this team should be at least 6 to 8 games above average at this point.

Less than two weeks for the primaries and then onward for a NEW MAYOR

I tihnk the tigers could/should be a little bit of sellers-
Our outfield is pretty crowded, and Rondell White is going to be a FA after this season. I wouldn't mind us getting something for him- preferable some type of a pitcher (I tihnk we have a pretty solid batting lineup, on paper).

Also, it looks like Infante is getting beter again, so they need to decide what to do about Guillean/Polanco/Infante (they should only kep 2 of those 3).

If you are looking for Cedar Point Tix, check your local AAA office (if you're a memeber) or, you local Meijers Grocery Store- they usually have good deals on Cedar Point Tickets.

Terry --

It would truly boggle my mind if a man that beat cancer that spread to multiple, and critical parts of his body made the decision to juice afterwards.

I know where you are coming from, and I've thought it before, but I just can't get passed that thought. It would be so wasteful for a man like him, knowing what he knows, to mess up his body with steroids, after he barely got out of cancer alive.

That, in my opinion, would be the biggest crime if he truly did juice. Not the fact that he used, but the fact that LANCE ARMSTRONG used. See what I mean?

T -

I'm disappointed in your beliefs about Lance Armstrong. He is THE most tested athlete on the planet yet there has never even been the slightest hint of wrongdoing.

The Discovery Channel - admittedly his current sponsor - has been showing a documentary recently on the 'science" of Lance Armstrong. Tests and evaluations have shown his heart efficiency and lungs capacity to be far above normal than that of the normal athlete. He apparently has a genetic gift that allows him his great success.

(Pardon the comparison, but it seems highly similar to the autopsy that showed the size and capability of Secretariat's heart to be astoundingly strong.)

Lance Armstrong appears to be a once-in-a-lifetime type of athlete, also possessing many of the other traits - courage, dedication, passion, competitiveness - many rich athletes today seemingly lack. I understand the current climate in sports, but it is a shame that it causes such cynicism in so many fans.

I am with you, when NFL players have the leverage, use it. I'm on T.O.'s side, if he was not in the SuperBowl it wouldn't have been a game at all. T.O. is the best receiver in football.

T.O. get your money.

As far as the Lions, I hope Joey can get it done. However, if he can't Jeff Garcia is good enough to get the ball to that great core of receivers. I would love to see Joey prove the critics wrong, however, I am unsure if he has the capability to be consistent.

Yes indeed, the Mayoral Race is in full gear. The smear commercials are coming out. I can't wait to see the Navigator, you know its coming.

With regard to Lance Armstrong he is not the brother of Stretch Armstrong (Tayshaun Prince) Just a quick word for those that didn't know.

Blood doping has run rampant in the Tour de France and biking in general, so I understand the speculation surrounding Lance.

However, this guy is a freak of nature. Where many athletes performances have dropped off when scrutinized, i.e. Marion Jones, Baseball Players name one, etc. Lance has continued on.

I didn't expect him to win last year and certainly didn't expect him to win again this year merely because of age, but the guy is a freak.

My hats off to him until I am given a reason to think otherwise.

Good article, I can't argue with a thing Mejia says. It was indeed a big mistake letting Brown go.

What I find funny is that the media wants to move on so quickly, I think the Pistons do indeed have the Detroit Media in their pocket.

NO ONE is asking the questions.

They are satisfied with drinking brake fluid, or hydrolic fluid, or whatever Bill Davidson and Joe D serve to the media.

TRRW,

I agree with you in the sense that I think T.O. has every right to try and get what he feels he is worth; however, I think that the Eagles also have the right to sit on his contract that he already agreed to, and force him to play under it, or not play at all.

I agree, the Eagles can take that position, that is unfortunately the business side of the NFL.

If contracts were guaranteed and they didn't throw these guys away as soon as they were done with them, I would be on the teams side.

However, if you are going to put your career and livelihood on the line every Sunday, you better protect yourself under the circumstances.

Terry,

If you ride Millenium Force take an extra change of underwear.

That's still the badest coaster in the world.

We were down at Cedar Point about a month ago and Millenium Force was broken down every time I tried to ride it. It looked great!

I do give a big thumbs up to the Raptor though!

The biggest problem with T.O. is the fact that he just signed this deal last year! It's not like he's in the last year of a 4 or 5 year deal.

He is being generously paid for what he does and has a very good contract. In my opinion he doesn't have much to complain about.

Hey guys,
I don't think I am going to hit many coasters. I know the lines are long and I will be with Celine who is five and Little B who is 3. I think I might be on the rubber ducky ride most of the week.

Clerical Issue TRRW b4 the Inferno most of sports media were all lovy dovy with the sports team. In fact it seems WXYT is trying to duplicate the Sports Inferno format. Even Tfoster was a little softy on the Sports team while on 1130am until He and MIke got together. I know Terry will disagree but Terry I remember them 1310 days yikes

Here is another point of the ruthelessness of the NFL. They can terminate your contract after 1 year or make you renegotiate which is why players want as much sign on bonuses as possible. TO contract ( I must say his agent really screwed him ) was back loaded with a bigger payments towards the end of his contract. I know well he should have read his contract but the agent either did not know what he was doing ( IE Master P ) or he was in cohuts with the team. Also we all know how the NFL Owners like to cut players b4 they have to make a huge payment. TO said something which Eagles won;t pub up " If you guys won;t give me the renegotiate so I can get my money which esclates towards the end then gaurantee my contract" It is time for the players union to drop Gene Upshaw.

I am not going to jinx my candidate but after the primary if he makes it (which I expect) let the ground games begin.

Leelanau Sports Guy...

From time to time you have those phenoms that, "put butts in the seats, sell jerseys, and create a frenzy that puts a team in the spotlight." T.O. is one of those phenoms. Certainly the team needs to maintain some sense of order with regard to contract re-negotiations(they can't open everyones contract up) but to me it would have been smart business to do something with T.O..

I know the Eagles will sell out regardless, but what about all the other revenue a guy like T.O. can generate. Sometimes teams don't know when to play hardball and when to bend. T.O.'s situation could have been handled quietly through a contract extension and adjustment. It would be over and Philly would be talking about the Superbowl again.

I'm sure T.O.'s has given further consideration to his situation after being injured. That would certainly be at the back of my mind after breaking a leg.

You noted that the NBA players have not ratified the contract yet. I haven't been able to find out if there is a problem or they just haven't gotten it done yet.

Do you know?

Perhaps the players woke up and decided that the minimum age limit was the stupidest thing since players wearing short-shorts.

One other point, you are right about Upshaw, it is time for some new blood running the NFL players union.

Ummm... about testing. The IOC didn't catch the Chinese swimmers until almost 3 years after they walked away with the gold medals.

And, even with all of that, I believe they caught only two of the eight believed to be doping.

I'm also a chemist by trade. So, performance enhancing drugs will always be ahead of the tests because governments don't require these suppliments and drugs to register the final metabolites to the IOC or wherever.

You don't always find the drug the put into their body. You often find metabolic products of these molecules. And, if you don't know the drug and you don't know the metabolites, how can you catch the guy?

I'm not saying Lance is guilty, but you definitely can't base negative drug tests on that.

The female Chinese swimmers alledgedly were injecting testosterone. Women naturally have some testosterone in them. But, there's a natural testosterone/estrogen ration and they would have exceeded that natural level.

The East Germans alledgedly used to make swimmers pregnant so that their estrogen levels would be high and they would be stronger before meets. They didn't catch the old East Germans until after they won all the medals.

Coincidentally, someone associated with the East German swimming was rumored to be associated with the Chinese swimmers that were in question.

Lance could be juiced. Lance could be clean. Lance could just be a freak of nature.

And, you can either doubt him or praise him, and you can't completely ridicule someone for taking either position.

Great post, it certainly would be a shame if Lance Armstrong was found to be juicing down the road.

He has become and American icon in and outside of his sport. What a negative message that would be.

I still remember how Canada was so enamored with Ben Johnson before he came crashing down. Just imagine what would happen in this country.

I would hope that the good guy persona that he projects is guinuine.

Unfortunately, as we have seen in the sports world, some folks are driven by fame and fortune and will do just about anything to get it.

I guess I am one of those on the side of seeing him as legit until something changes my opinion.
