The Lions play the New York Jets tonight in the first exhibition game of the season.
I cannot wait to see safety Kenoy Kennedy blast the first wide receiver coming over the middle. I want to see lighter offensive lineman Damien Woody and I want to see a healthy Charles Rogers catch that first pass and flip the ball to the official.
But I admit to be transfixed to the freak show.
Doesn't it always come back to quarterback for the Lions? We will study every move of starter Joey Harrington and surmise why he deserves to keep his job or lose it. And we will do the same with back up Jeff Garcia, the more experienced man.
Looking at a Lions quarterback like a zoo animal is almost as big a Detroit tradition as Vernors, Faygo and Belle Isle.
We are obsessed with this position. Many of you booed Harrington so loudly that it even surprised some Lions players. He will be fine tonight. I question how well he plays at home.
You will be all over him after the first mistake and is he tough enough to handle it? There are no excuses on offense. The Lions are solid at wide receiver, running back and tight end. They are young and will make youthful mistakes, but if they get any type of quarterback play they should score a lot of points.
The freak show begins tonight.
And yes I will be front and center in front of the television to see the bearded lady sing.

I watched most all the Lion games last year, and not much else as far as other teams till the playoffs started. I was amazed at the difference in execution I saw from the playoff teams on both sides of the ball from what I was used to seeing from the Lions.

I think it is foolish to expect them to somehow change overnight. It will take time (if this group is capable), and there sure doesn't seem to be much patience in this town.

I believe Joey will be fine if he can finally get an O-line that is at least average. How can he go through a progression of reads when he has defensive lineman crawling all over him before he can get set! I think back to the way Barry used to have to elude two to three guys before he could reach the scrimmage line. This position has sucked for a long time.

The offensive line is atleast average if not better. Kevin Jones had the best second half of the season for any running back. I think the linemen had something to do with because the passing game was not opening any room for KJ. What happened when KJ was running the ball? The passing game opened up. Joey Blue Skies had a couple 300 yard games in the second half of the season. The Lions are in the middle of the pack as far as sacks allowed. The problem isn't the line. Check the stats.

Thank GOD football is back and we can now ignore baseball until next february.

And the last I looked, the lines seemed to be one of the team strengths, on both sides of the ball.

I would hope the Lion's fans don't boo Joey from the outset. That would indeed be wrong.

But, I don't know what to expect since they booed him at "practice" yeah I'm talkin bout "practice".

I think the freak show will be watching the bonehead Lion fans that just can't wait to open up on the boos.

Personally, I can't wait to see how this team clicks, whether they have the rhythm and timing that is crucial in the west coast offense. I also want to see the defense, particularly the frontline. These guys should create havoc for opposing QB's this year. A good ole sack fest would be nice.

You forgot the other big freak show today.

Mike Valenti -vs- Wojo

Make sure everyone votes for Mike. Tell your friends and relatives to vote. It's time to send Wojo packing. Since DSR is so pro WDFN, it will take a full out effort to crown the deserving "FREAK" Mike Valenti.

How can I possibly vote for Mike when he's so anti-Latino? Outside of an organized hate group, he's our number one nemesis.

Clerical Issue

I caught Artest on a great show QuiteFrankly. Although i won't call him dumb but seems to not get it. He seems to still be in denial mode. He called out Ben Wallace saying he was jealous. When Stephen asked why not go after Ben as opposed to a guy half his size he could not answer. He also seemed to allude that he could take Ben Wallace. I did not agree with Stern suspension but I did think Artest would have learned alot more than what he stated

Tom correction football has gone year round and if baseball is not careful it will be relagated to hockey status nationally. I am ready for good football. TRRW I am not sure where do u see the sack fest on this team. Rememebr Dick Jauran is a bend not break kind of guy. I will be watching to see if the west coast is modified for Joey and the rest of the personell.

As for the freak show, I agree with TRRW. Sadly the fans are once again eagerly anticipating the first opportunity to boo the most scutinized job in Michigan...qb for the Lions.

You call MIke anti-Latino. But I caught you have dinner with him at Mexican Village. Can you explain that? And am I still banned from Mexican town?

You're right about Dick Jaron's conservative play. He is a play not to get beat, rather than play to win guy.

Everyone talks about turning Harrington loose and letting him go deep. I think they need to turn this defense loose.

Take prevent out of the vocabulary and insert attack.

With regard to the ban on Indian names and mascots, Mike is wrong on the Oklahoma Seminoles being in agreement with the use of Seminoles as a team name. Florida Seminoles are for it, however the Oklahoma Siminoles are against it and have publically expressed that.

BTW, heard a rumor about the Eagles sniffing around the Lions for a WR.

I have no problem sending them Kevin Johnson for a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick. Finally, we can put the screws on a team and get value for making a shrewd offseason move.

But trading away one of our prize posessions, even with an injury history, is very Tigers-esque.

Matt Millen, leave Chuck Rogers alone!!!

Mike your wrong on the Seminole Indians of Oklahoma. I do feel that PC has gone too far however your wrong on the FSU issue. Similar to Italians having issues with the every Italian is Mafia.

No. Mike is right. They switched positions and in face some Oklahoma native americans are going to FSU on scholarship. So they are on board.

Here is the issue. Is there one man that speaks for the Seminoles???? Alot of people think Jessie Jackson is the spokesperson for all African Americans. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

To take one individual or a representative group as gospel as to how an entire body of people sees something is wrong.

A better comparison would be the Michigan State Italians... Do you think one person or a group of people could endorse that on behalf of all Italians????

Mike you do have a point. Dang so is there objection is only to get money. Or is it to grease the leadership and then you get the okay. I just wonder if someone named a team the Detroit Blacks and had sambo as a mascot and then the Naacp signed off would it be okay.

While I agree with you on the point that if the tribe agrees with it, it is ok. I don't know however that they have the entire blessing of the tribe.

Moreover, think about it, the whole premise behind an institution of higher education, and or a professional entity being called a group of people is flat out stupid and potentially damaging.

I think it is just too easy to say if they agree with it allow it to happen.

12:16 PM

Blogger The_Real_Right_Way said...

To me the right thing to do is change the name. On the other side of the coin, there is the legal/financial rationale.

At some point, a person or group of people in the Seminole tribe will take issue with FSU.

While FSU may take enormous effort in trying to project the right image, you cannot represent a group of people in an acceptable fashion to "all." I think they are now representatives of the Seminole tribe and have obligations beyond what they may some day want.

Just think about it, when Pepsi or Coke gets that exclusive contract to sell their product at the stadium, they pay millions. What is the value of the name Seminoles to a "semi professional team."

Truth 'El Verdad',

I lifted your ban from Mexican Town after you finally showed up and played some ball with us. You're mistaken about me eating with Mike at Mexican Village because I only eat at Mexican Town Restaurant, Evie's, Ranchero's or El Zocalos. Plus I'd never bring him down there, it would kill my street cred to be seen with hime. I can provide proof of Mike's anti-Latino attitude. Do you remember the show when Mike was ragging on Alex Sanchez? He said during that segment that the guy must have floated over on a raft with 15 cousins from Cuba. Furthermore, Mike is constantly asking me for landscaping tips. How do you explain that?
